Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until soft.
- Add ground beef and Italian sausage, cooking until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Stir in canned tomatoes, tomato paste, herbs, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20-30 minutes.
- To make the béchamel sauce, melt butter in a saucepan, stir in flour to make a roux, then gradually whisk in milk. Cook until thickened, and add a pinch of nutmeg.
Assembly and Baking
- In a baking dish, layer noodles, meat sauce, béchamel, and cheese. Repeat layers, ending with cheese on top.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes until bubbly and golden.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
Use fresh herbs for a brighter flavor. For a vegetarian option, replace meat with mushrooms and zucchini. Let lasagna sit for a few minutes before slicing to help it hold its shape. Add more cheese for a cheesier lasagna.
